One of the most commonly-asked questions we get asked at our live events is, “Do you have a store?” While that idea does find its way into our conversations from time to time, our answer is always, “Not yet.” But what we DO have is a jewelry LOFT. My morning commute involves walking up a fold-down ladder to this space—the most beautiful, most functional, and most creative space I could be spoiled enough to have. It is the 3rd floor in our historic home.
Years ago when I was not yet in the picture, Eric and his parents acquired what is now our home. It was built in 1904 by the railroad and has lived many lives, even being a law office at one point! If these walls could talk there would be some amazing stories, I’m sure. When Eric obtained the house, he knew it needed extensive repair. In fact, it was ready to be torn down because it was in such bad shape. BUT there was raw beauty all around waiting to be brought back to life…..original hardwood floors and all. I’ll spare the full remodel story for now, but Eric’s always up for sharing it if you ask him! If you appreciate old homes like we do, it’s worth a listen.
During the remodel, one of the design problems they set out to fix was the flat roof above the attic. It had been leaking and was high up on the list of urgent repairs. They discovered an expansive amount of unused attic space as well as the ability to add a cupola to the top of the house for better watershed. The result? Leak repaired…..loft created! As a bachelor, Eric’s vision for this space was a game room. Fast forward to married life, when the Pressed operation was quickly outgrowing it’s corner in the main floor office, we found ourselves looking up at the loft one night and the idea hit us. Pressed could inhabit the loft!! How it took us so long to realize this, we’ll never know. Now this space consists of an L-shaped reclaimed wood and pipe table (where the jewelry production happens), a shipping station, and a central table where new ideas are dreamed up.
I love this space with all of its natural light. I love that it’s a set-apart section of the home and the only thing that happens in it is creative work. I love making your jewelry in this space, and I hope you enjoyed this little tour!
