At my 8th grade graduation, my teacher gave me an Ansel Adams poster with a black and white photo of the mountains. It was stunning. Attached to the poster was a note from her saying, “May you always lift up your eyes unto the hills.” I held onto that poster for many years, and her encouragement to this day. Many people have had great thoughts on what David meant when he wrote this Psalm. For me, this verse is a reminder that I need to remain positioned with my eyes upward for my help, strength, and guidance in this world. It’s a reminder to keep my eyes off of my challenges and sorrows and to have a heart that looks to the divine attributes of God for what I need. His providence, His promises, His faithfulness–those are the hills to which I must lift up my eyes. Let us remember as David did, “My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.”
